Costa Mesa currently relies mainly on retail businesses for its income. This shows in the South Coast Plaza, where the mall is not only a part of the local lifestyle but a source of bread and butter to the local population. This one mall contains 322 stores and generates some of the greatest sales volume of all shopping plazas throughout the entire nation.
There is a triad of main industries in Costa Mesa aside from the retail commerce. These are manufacturers of electronics, of plastics, pharmaceuticals. Clearly, these create a need for skilled laborers, some unskilled labor and also, highly educated skilled professionals in the area.
