Introduction

Costa Mesa

Costa Mesa is a very modern city. It was incorporated in 1953, although people were in fact already living there. The population has more than quadrupled, and has now passed over the 100,000 resident mark.

This is a Southern Californian, coastal city. The Southwestern edge of Costa Mesa is only one mile from the Pacific Ocean. This large human settlement is north of San Diego, and south of Los Angeles. Within this context we can see it as a bustling small city in an area with easy access to two megalopolai (giant cities).

Obviously, this area was originally tribal native territory whose European influence arrived from the Catholic Spaniards. Once ‘conquered’ so to speak, the area became part of what became the nation of Mexico in the 1800’s, and was subsequently taken by the slightly older young nation the USA.

Like so many Californian towns this was an agricultural area until rather recently. The citrus farms yielded to the overwhelming forces brought about by the post-WWII boom in the economy and population. Of course, California has been one of the top locations for other Americans to relocate to during the second half of the 1900’s. Between all those relocating from the North and East and even South to Cali., and it’s powerful attraction to emigrating neighbors in Mexico, California is simply teeming with human life these days.

Costa Mesa does not have a Mayor, but relies on a “Council-manager” system to run. The ‘corporate form’ of the city consists of a staff of around 600 personnel. If you go to the website, there is a place for you to access the Mayor’s Office because they realize that you might expect them to have one even though they don’t. This city is now a part of Orange County.
